Supported Living
through Emmaus Homes

Empowering adults with developmental disabilities to live with independence, dignity, and belonging.

Support for a Life of Independence

Living without the right support can leave us feeling isolated, frustrated, and disempowered. At Emmaus, we believe everyone deserves the resources to live as independently as possible, surrounded by people who truly understand and care.

For more than 130 years, our faith-based mission has remained the same: to walk alongside adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), providing whole-person support rooted in dignity, inclusion, and self-advocacy.

What is Supported Living?

Supported Living is at the heart of our mission at Emmaus Homes.

Supported Living is a residential service where three to four adults with disabilities share a home in a community of their choice. This is their home, where they live alongside housemates and receive personalized support from trained Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), up to 24/7, based on their needs. We help connect people to a place where they can thrive, live independently, and build relationships in an environment that is their own.

Habilitative Means Teaching

The Emmaus Homes approach is habilitative. That means we teach individuals the skills they need to thrive. Such as:

01

Keeping up with household responsibilities like cooking, laundry, or yardwork

02

Learning to shop for groceries and manage money

03

Exploring employment and volunteer opportunities

04

Accessing the community with confidence

05

Building meaningful social and spiritual connections

We encourage every client to contribute to their household and set personal goals — creating a space where independence is practiced and progress is celebrated.

Support for Daily Living

Emmaus Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are the backbone of Supported Living — the key to helping each individual thrive. Our teams form long-lasting relationships with clients and become trusted partners in daily life.

Emmaus DSPs provide individualized, person-centered support in areas like:

01

Daily Living Activities (ADLs) such as:

  • Dressing
  • Eating
(including dietary preferences, textures, and adaptive equipment)
  • Bathing and hygiene
(with dignity, preferred routines, and personal comfort)
  • Mobility
(supporting use of ramps, lifts, wheelchairs, and more)

02

Community engagement

from grocery trips to church visits, ballgames, and other and social activities

03

Employment coaching

and volunteer readiness

04

Medical coordination

including transportation to and from appointments and communication with providers

05

Emotional and spiritual support

rooted in trust, respect, and each individual’s unique background

Spiritual Services

As part of our whole-person approach, we offer dedicated spiritual services for people of all faiths — and of no faith. Our full-time chaplain walks alongside clients and families through life’s joys and challenges, providing:

Pastoral visits at home and in hospitals

End-of-life and grief support

Online Bible studies

Help connecting with local congregations and faith communities

Access to sacraments when desired

Whether someone finds comfort in prayer, ritual, reflection, or simply being heard, our spiritual care is personalized, inclusive, and always voluntary.
