E Advocates #22: Missouri August Primary Recap

by | Aug 26, 2024 | Advocacy, E-Advocates

Missouri primary elections are incredibly important! Because of the nature of Missouri’s political climate, which tends to be Republican overall, some primaries that occurred on August 6th will likely determine the outcome of the general election in November. In this blog, I provide a recap of important-to-Emmaus primary outcomes.

Primary Results of Note in Relation to Emmaus:

    • State Senate District (SD) 23: This is Senator Bill Eigel’s District currently, which covers a substantial portion of St. Charles County. Because Sen. Eigel terms out in January, and this district is likely to remain Republican-controlled, we kept an eye on this race. SD 23 includes our main office and Learning Lab, and 32 of our homes we support (Apricot, Barleystone, Briarcliff, Canary, Chapel Hill, Graybrdige, Hathaway, Host Home Arnold, Host Home Curtis, Host Home Smooths, Host Home White, Howell, Kellywood, Kickshaw, Majestic, Mallard, Newport, Old Horstmeier, Park East, Park North, Park West, Red Ceder, Rio Vista, Spring Gardens, Town and Country, Universal, West Adams, Whetstone, Whispering Ridge, Windermere, and Woodstone). Many of our staff and supporters live in this district as well. In a 3-way Republican primary, Rep. Adam Schnelting prevailed. We are excited to work with him as he has supported Emmaus as a State Representative and is aware of the challenges we face.
    • House District (HD) 109: Rep. Kyle Marquart is the Republican incumbent who has only been in this role for 2 years. However, he lost to the person he beat in 2022, former State Rep. John Simmons. Simmons is favored to win over the Democratic candidate based on the political leaning of HD 109.
    • HD 64: Rep. Tony Lovasco currently holds this role and has since 2018. He ran again for his final term before he’d be term-limited in the House, but he lost to a Republican challenger in the primary, Deanna Self. Self is favored to win over the Democratic candidate based on the political leaning of HD 64.

A few of the Representatives who have Emmaus-supported homes in their districts have either termed out, opted not to run for re-election, or attempted a run at another position. Most incumbents clinched their Republican or Democratic nominations. You can view the full list of results on the Missouri Secretary of State’s official website here.
