E Advocates #21: People with Disabilities Have the Right to Accessible Voting!

by | Aug 12, 2024 | Advocacy, E-Advocates

Client and their Direct Support Professional showing off their People with disabilities, their families, and the service organizations who support them would make up most of the voters if they all voted! Everyone’s vote has power. And everyone should exercise this right.

Your ballot will not be identified because you used a particular accessible voting method. It will be just as anonymous as anyone else’s vote.

Sometimes people with disabilities do not know that they can vote or be provided with accessible voting options. Here are your rights and some things to know:

      • You get to choose which way to vote among available methods.
      • If you have a permanent disability, you can request to be placed on a list of voters who automatically receive an absentee ballot for each election.
      • You can also vote absentee for other reasons like being away on the day of the election.
      • Two weeks before an election, you can go in person to your local election authority’s main office or satellite offices to vote, with no excuse needed.
      • Wheelchair-accessible voting booths are required at each election site.

If you prefer showing up in person to vote on the day of the election (I usually do, because it’s fun!), as soon as you enter the building, let one of the poll workers know that you need an accessible voting machine or any other whatever accommodation you may need. These Accessible voting machines can:

      • Read the ballot to you through headphones for those who are blind.
      • Provide larger print on ballots for those with low vision.
      • If you have limited use of your hands, the knobs and buttons on the machine are designed to help you.
