E Advocates #20: We Need Your Voice
We need your help to make a crucial difference in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is updating the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system, which significantly impacts community-based services.
Why Your Voice is Needed
The SOC system, which collects vital workforce data, has not been updated since 2018 and will not be revised again for several years. Currently, there’s no specific classification for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). DSPs are the critical workers who support individuals with IDD and are the backbone of the work at Emmaus. This lack of recognition makes collecting essential data about this crucial workforce difficult. Accurate data is key to shaping better policies and ensuring DSPs receive the recognition and support they need to provide high-quality support.
The Opportunity
The OMB is now accepting public comments on the SOC revisions and asking for input on new job categories, including DSPs. This is a chance to advocate for the DSP workforce and highlight its importance. The public comment period is open until August 12, 2024.
